Snow Day

The first day of snow!!!

We live in the southeast, so snow is a big event. My daughter, Caroline, experienced snow last winter, but she obviously did not remember it when she saw the large wet flakes falling outside our kitchen window this morning. Much of the day she spent running back to the windows or door to check to see if the snow was there. It was still falling. All day.

What a lovely day to be warm and inside! I started immeditely thinking that we needed some fun winter, snowy activities to keep us occupied inside today.

First I thought of a snow scape which turned out pretty well.

Supplies:
  • Elmer's glue
  • shallow dish for glue
  • 1 piece of black construction paper
  • small bag of cotton balls
  • white poster paint
  • q-tip or paint brush (for painting/labeling)
1.) I drew an outline for the land and snowman with my pencil.

2.) Caroline dipped the cotton balls, one by one, in the dish of glue and placed them on the paper. I helped guide her arrangement and did glue half of the snow dune (due to time constraints).

3.) We used a q-tip and painted a title (me) and snow flakes falling (both of us).

Assessment: This was a fun project for a snowy morning. It took about 15-20 min. Definitely one to be done with the child, not independently due to mess and skill level. If your child is older, perhaps 3, they might be able to do it by themselves.
